Global Solutions to Illegal Drugs

For the past decades, governments and law enforcement agencies across the world have attempted to eradicate the production, distribution, importation, and use of illegal drugs. Countries having tried a myriad of policies, all intending to curb illegal drug use in their own country. From Narcotic Acts to taxes on Marijuana, efforts were put in place to reduce the growing epidemic.

This global effort, now commonly know as the world's "War on Drugs," has had mixed results. Agencies such as America's Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) have done well to combat the threat of illegal drugs on both the domestic and international fronts. Severe jail sentences are in effect to derail drug importers from delivering their shipment. In addition, countries have increased the their boarder controls, placing more and more surveillance on strategic roads, harbors, and airstrips.

It would appear that there is a serious global problem regarding the production of illegal drugs. As one country begin to flex its muscles against a growing domestic market, another country with fewer restrictions will almost certainly pick up where another has left off. As long as the demand for illegal drugs remains high, its production will undoubtedly remain. One fact is certain, in this outrageously lucrative industry, drug cartels appear to be far from extinct.

Far from the norm, the country on the Netherlands has adopted a legal approach to one of the most commonly known drug, marijuana. Policy-makers in the Netherlands believe that if a problem has proved to be unsolvable, it is better to try controlling it instead of continuing to enforce unsuccessful laws. The original action of Netherlands has sparked fierce among countries, particularly those in the European Union.
